Chinese authorities released popular Tibetan singer A-Sang in early August, a source close to him said, but local public security has kept him under surveillance and barred him from using Chinese social media. A-Sang was arrested on July 8 in Ngaba County, Sichuan, after performing a cover of “Prince of Peace,” a song that references His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His and his wife’s Kuaishou accounts were shut down despite a post saying they were safe. Despite controls, Tibetans marked the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday online. According to the International Campaign for Tibet, the case highlights ongoing repression.
