A round of demolitions at Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in eastern Tibet has begun, with at least 1,060 monk and nun residences reportedly targeted. The International Campaign for Tibet reports the demolitions started around July 13 and were being carried out at night. By July 15, six residences had been destroyed, according to an anonymous source cited by the group. Larung Gar, founded in 1980, is one of the largest centers for Tibetan Buddhist study and has faced repeated demolitions and forced evictions since 2001. The latest action follows China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Law taking effect on July 1.
