US Senators Introduce Bill to Strengthen U.S. Support for Tibet

U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Jim Risch have introduced the Senate version of the Assuring the Future of Tibet Act of 2026, seeking to strengthen long-term U.S. ties with the Tibetan people and their democratically elected leadership. The bill would recognize the Central Tibetan Administration as a continuation of Tibetan governance established by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and support direct U.S. engagement with Tibetan leaders. It also calls for U.S. advocacy for CTA observer status at the United Nations and affirms that resolving the Tibet-China dispute is a matter of strategic interest to the United States.
