More than 16,000 people have signed an online petition calling for a permanent memorial near United Nations headquarters in New York for Pawo Lobga Rangzen. The petition, issued by the Joint Urgent Action Committee for Martyr Lobga Rangzen of the Tibetan Community of New York and New Jersey, asks the United Nations, New York City, and relevant authorities to work with the Tibetan community on the memorial. Rangzen self-immolated outside the UN on July 2 to protest China’s rule in Tibet and call for Tibetan independence. The petition aims to collect 25,600 signatures.
