Members of the Congressional Executive Commission on China called for stronger consequences for China’s policies in Tibet during a November 20 hearing on religious freedom. Witnesses included ICT’s Bhuchung K Tsering, Chinese Christians, a Hui Muslim advocate and others. Former Ambassador Sam Brownback described a “cultural genocide” in Tibet and urged the United States to consider recognizing Tibetan independence if China refuses dialogue with the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration. Rep Jim McGovern expressed similar impatience and called for actions with real impact. Phayul reported that Tsering stressed the need for greater international pressure on China.
