UN Rights Chief Flags Tibet, Uyghurs as Priority Issues

At the opening of the 60th UN Human Rights Council session, High Commissioner Volker Türk warned of unprecedented threats to global human rights and highlighted ongoing abuses in Tibet. He cited restrictions on religious freedom, cultural expression, and language rights, noting cases of detention and deaths in custody, including Gonjo Tulku Palden Wangyal. The Commissioner stressed that Tibetans, alongside Uyghurs and other minorities, continue to face severe repression despite China’s claims of progress. He reaffirmed that monitoring Tibet remains a priority for his Office and urged renewed international solidarity to defend universal human rights.
