UN Rights Chief Calls Out Cultural Rights Violations in Tibet

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, in a global human rights address on 17 June, raised alarm over continued violations of cultural and other rights in Tibet. Calling for the release of detainees imprisoned for exercising fundamental freedoms, he urged China to bring its laws and policies in line with international human rights standards. Türk’s remarks came amid warnings of widespread global instability, and included concerns over repression in Xinjiang and Hong Kong. He reiterated the UN’s founding commitment to justice, rights, and international cooperation, now increasingly under threat.
