UN Experts Press China on Detention and Torture of Tibetan Activist Namkyi

Six UN human rights experts have raised concerns over the arbitrary detention, torture, and ill-treatment of Tibetan activist Namkyi, who was arrested at age 15 in Lhasa in 2015 for carrying portraits of the Dalai Lama and Kirti Rinpoche during a peaceful march. In a joint communication to Beijing, they questioned the legal basis of her detention, her trial’s fairness, and her family’s lack of access. The experts said her case reflects wider repression in Tibet. Namkyi, now living in exile, testified at the UN in February, sharing her account of imprisonment and torture under Chinese authorities.
