UN Expert Questions Paris Museums’ Tibet Nomenclature Changes

UN Special Rapporteur on cultural rights, Alexandra Xanthaki, has expressed concern over recent changes to Tibetan exhibits at Paris museums. The Musée du Quai Branly had replaced “Tibet” with “Xizang Autonomous Region,” while the Musée Guimet renamed its “Nepal-Tibet” gallery as “Himalayan World.” Xanthaki sent letters to China, France, and the two museums on July 31, 2025, seeking clarification. Following protests, Quai Branly restored “Tibet” in October 2024, but Guimet faces ongoing legal challenges. Xanthaki said replacing Tibetan terminology undermines cultural heritage rights and called for measures to prevent such practices.
