Tibetan environmental rights activist Tsongon Tsering was released from prison on July 8, 2025, after spending over eight months in detention. The 29-year-old was initially arrested in October 2024 for posting a video complaint against mining activities by Anhui Xianhe Construction Engineering Company. He was sentenced to eight months for "disrupting social order," later extended to sixteen months after refusing to plead guilty. His early release comes with severe restrictions, including bans on public remarks deemed "harmful to the government" and participation in group activities. According to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, Tsering appeared physically frail upon release. A large group of supporters welcomed him back to his village.
