NED honors missing 11th Panchen Lama with democracy medal

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) awarded its 2025 Democracy Service Medal to the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who remains forcibly disappeared since 1995. The award was accepted on his behalf by Zeekyab Rinpoche, Abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in exile. The honor marks 30 years since his abduction and affirms Tibetans’ right to choose their spiritual leaders freely. In a message, the Dalai Lama expressed sorrow over the Panchen Lama’s disappearance but hope for his freedom. The ceremony, hosted by NED President Damon Wilson, was attended by Sikyong Penpa Tsering and other Tibetan representatives.
