On the 36th birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, members of the European Parliament called on China to reveal his whereabouts and release him immediately. The Panchen Lama was abducted in 1995, three days after being recognised by the Dalai Lama, and has not been seen since. Describing his case as a grave violation of religious freedom and children’s rights, MEPs marked the day with placards and parliamentary actions. According to reports, his disappearance remains a symbol of China’s continued repression of Tibetan religion and identity.
