Italian Lawmakers Warn China Law Threatens Tibetan Culture

Italian parliamentarians condemned China’s new Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity, warning that it threatens Tibetan language, identity, and culture ahead of its July 1, 2026 implementation. Senator Giulio Terzi, a former Italian foreign minister, said the law promotes forced cultural assimilation by imposing Mandarin and weakening Tibetan identity. Senator Andrea Di Priamo, chair of the Italy-Tibet Parliamentary Intergroup, said it risks erasing minority identity and autonomy. Parliamentarian Ilenia Malavasi called it an existential issue, citing about one million Tibetan children sent to residential boarding schools and the threat to Tibetan heritage.
