ICT Urges UNESCO to List Potala Palace Ensemble as Endangered World Heritage Site

The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) has appealed to UNESCO to designate the Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace as a World Heritage Site in Danger during its July 2025 session. This follows reports of serious cultural violations in Lhasa, including the construction of Chinese-style pavilions obstructing Jokhang Temple and its rituals, and political indoctrination of monks. ICT criticizes China’s failure to meet UNESCO’s heritage standards, warning that ongoing sinicization and mass tourism threaten the site’s integrity and authenticity. The group urges global action to protect Tibet’s religious and cultural heritage from further erosion.
