Outdoor apparel brand Arc’teryx and artist Cai Guo-qiang faced backlash after staging a massive fireworks display in Tibet, prompting officials to launch an investigation. The project, called “The Rising Dragon,” lit fireworks at 5,500 metres above sea level, but critics condemned it as reckless on the fragile plateau. Arc’teryx apologised, pledging to work with environmental groups and support conservation projects, while Cai promised to help repair any damage. Tibetan writer Tsering Woeser called the event “cultural imperialism,” accusing organisers of exploiting Tibet’s sacred landscape as a backdrop for profit and self-promotion.
