EU Highlights Tibet Human Rights at Summit with China

At the 25th EU-China Summit in Beijing on July 24, 2025, European Union leaders raised concerns about Tibet's human rights situation with President Xi Jinping. EU Council President Antonio Costa, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and High Representative Kaja Kallas participated in discussions marking 50 years of diplomatic relations. The summit followed June's EU-China Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels, where the EU criticized China's interference in selecting religious leaders, including the Dalai Lama's succession process. The EU stressed that religious succession should follow traditional norms, not government control. Tibetan cases featured prominently in the EU's concerns about human rights defenders and fundamental freedoms restrictions.
