An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Tibet on May 12, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor, which occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, followed a smaller quake of magnitude 3.7 on May 8 in the same region. Experts warn that shallow quakes pose a higher risk of damage due to their proximity to the surface. The Tibetan Plateau remains highly seismic due to ongoing tectonic pressure from the Indian and Eurasian plates. Al Jazeera quoted geophysicist Marianne Karplus as stressing the need for resilient infrastructure and continued scientific studies in the region.
