China has announced visa restrictions on select U.S. personnel accused of “misconduct” on Tibet-related matters, in response to Washington’s recent sanctions on Chinese officials. The U.S. had imposed curbs citing Beijing’s ongoing restrictions on access to Tibetan regions for foreign diplomats, journalists, and observers, demanding full and transparent entry rights. Responding, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian declared Tibet an “internal affair” and accused the U.S. of violating international norms. While Beijing claims Tibet is open to foreigners under guided permits, it maintains tight control, especially over diplomatic and media visits, citing national sovereignty.
