Australia Raises Tibet Rights, Dalai Lama Reincarnation at UNHRC

On 23 September, Australia voiced concern over human rights violations in Tibet and China’s interference in the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation during the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council. Ambassador Clare Walsh, Australia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said governments must act in line with international norms and “should not interfere in the selection of religious leaders—including the Dalai Lama.” Earlier this month, Australian MPs and senators echoed similar concerns during Tibet Lobby Day in Canberra, criticising Beijing’s attempts to control Tibetan religious succession.
