DHARAMSHALA – The 27th annual Tibetan Shoton Festival, celebrating the rich tradition of Tibetan opera, commenced today at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in Dharamshala, running from April 10 to 22, 2024. The festival, reported by Tibet.net, marks a significant event in the Tibetan exile community, showcasing the enduring spirit and cultural heritage of the Tibetan people.
Kyabje Kundeling Tatsak Rinpoche Jetsun Tenzin Chokyi Gyaltsen honored the festival as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present included Kalon Tharlam Dolma Changra of the Department of Education, and Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang from the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, among various representatives of the Tibetan community.
The festival opened with a preview of opera stories by participating troupes, setting the stage for a vibrant celebration of Tibetan performing arts. In his keynote speech, Kundeling Tatsak Rinpoche lauded the Tibetan community’s resilience and commitment to preserving their cultural traditions, despite the challenges of living in exile. He highlighted the pivotal role of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in inspiring Tibetans to honor their rich cultural heritage and urged the community to follow His Holiness’s guidance faithfully.

As a gesture of support, Rinpoche presented each troupe group with a cheque of 1 Lakh rupees from the Department of Religion and Culture, CTA, aiding their sustenance and continued dedication to the art form.
The Shoton Festival will feature performances by Tibetan opera troupes from various settlements, promising an enriching experience for attendees and further solidifying the festival’s status as a cornerstone of Tibetan culture in exile.
This annual event not only serves as a platform for artistic expression but also as a reminder of Tibet’s unique traditions and the importance of cultural preservation among Tibetans worldwide.
