The Ontario Parliamentary Friends of Tibet extended a warm welcome to Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the President of the Central Tibetan Administration, in a significant event at Queen’s Park today. The gathering, led by MPP Bhutila Karpoche, Deputy Speaker of the Ontario Legislative Assembly, showcased Ontario’s commitment to multiculturalism and its unwavering support for the Tibetan community, as reported by the Canada Tibet Committee.
The ceremony commenced with Deputy Speaker Karpoche highlighting Ontario’s initiatives to embrace the Tibetan community, including the establishment of the Tibetan Heritage Month Bill, an annual internship program for Tibetan youth, and the tradition of hosting Tibetan delegations in the Ontario Parliament. These actions underline the provincial government’s dedication to cultural diversity and support for Tibet.
Among the attendees were notable figures such as Hon. Michael Ford, Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, who emphasized Ontario’s dedication to building an inclusive society that celebrates cultural diversity. The event also saw participation from several ministers and MPPs, reinforcing the bipartisan support for the Tibetan cause within the Ontario legislature.

Sikyong Penpa Tsering addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude for Ontario’s support and highlighting the aspirations and challenges of the Tibetan people. He stressed the importance of challenging the People’s Republic of China‘s narratives about Tibet, as mentioned by the Canada Tibet Committee.
The meeting concluded with a standing ovation for Sikyong Penpa Tsering during the Question Period, a gesture that underscored the Ontario Parliament’s collective endorsement of his leadership and the Tibetan cause. Accompanying Sikyong were Dr. Namgyal Choedup, representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Office of Tibet, and Sherap Therchin, Executive Director of the Canada Tibet Committee.
This historic welcome reflects Ontario’s deep-seated values of multicultural engagement and international solidarity, further establishing the province’s role in advocating for the rights and well-being of the Tibetan people.
