Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) has banned government employees from using DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model, over national security concerns. MODA classified DeepSeek as a Chinese ICT product and warned that data leaks could pose security risks. The restriction applies to government agencies, public schools, state-owned firms, and critical infrastructure projects. The ban follows a 2019 Executive Yuan regulation limiting the use of ICT products that threaten cybersecurity. DeepSeek has faced criticism from human rights groups and experts for spreading propaganda, censoring topics, and collecting personal data.
