UN Forum Highlights Cultural Suppression in Tibet Amid Minority Rights Discussions
At the 17th UN Forum on Minority Issues in Geneva, Phuntsok Topgyal of the Tibet Bureau Geneva condemned China for forcibly enrolling over 1 million Tibetan children in boarding schools where Tibetan language is banned. Speaking on November 29, 2024, he also detailed the demolition of sites like Atsok Monastery and the persecution of cultural advocates. The forum, attended by 690 participants, addresses themes such as education, media, and culture, aiming to enhance minority representation and cultural preservation. The findings will inform a Special Rapporteur's report for the Human Rights Council, spotlighting urgent actions to uphold minority rights.
