Hundreds of Tibetans gathered in Dharamsala on May 16 to mark the 49th day since the death of Tulku Hungkar Dorje, a revered Buddhist leader who died in Vietnamese custody. The abbot, known for promoting Tibetan culture and education, reportedly fled Chinese persecution and died in Ho Chi Minh City at age 56. Rights groups and Tibetan associations have called for an independent probe into the circumstances of his death. A separate memorial event celebrated his legacy and urged Vietnam to ensure a transparent investigation, reported RFA.
