Kathmandu Film Festival Criticized for Promoting Chinese Propaganda on Tibet

The 21st Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF), set for May 29–June 2, faces strong backlash over its “Xizang Panorama” segment featuring six Chinese-made films portraying Tibet under state narratives. Tibetan groups condemned the use of the term “Xizang” as part of China’s effort to erase Tibetan identity. A coalition of 145 organizations called for the program’s cancellation, labelling it “weaponised storytelling” that promotes Chinese propaganda, including claims of Tibet’s “peaceful liberation.” KIMFF has not responded to criticism, drawing concern over its role in potentially legitimizing cultural oppression in Tibet.
