Europe Warns China’s Ethnic Unity Law Threatens Tibetan Identity

European lawmakers and officials have stepped up criticism of China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Law, warning that it threatens the cultural, religious and linguistic rights of Tibetans. The law took effect on July 1 after the European Parliament adopted a resolution on April 30 calling for its repeal. EU Commissioner Hadja Lahbib raised concerns over restrictions on Tibetan religious freedom, cultural identity and the right of religious communities to choose their leaders. The EU also warned that the law could have extraterritorial effects. Tibetan supporters protested outside the European Parliament in Brussels, joined by several members.
