Exiled Tibetans Reject 17-Point Agreement on Its 74th Anniversary

Tibetans in exile marked the 74th anniversary of the forced ‘Seventeen-Point Agreement’ with a panel discussion in McLeod Ganj, denouncing it as an illegitimate deal imposed under Chinese coercion in 1951. Organised by the RTYC, Dharamsala, the panel included CTA spokesperson Tenzin Lekshey, activist Tenzin Tsundue, and scholars Dr Tsangtup Topla and Dr Lobsang Yangtso. Speakers argued that the agreement failed to deliver on promises of religious freedom and autonomy. His Holiness the Dalai Lama repudiated the agreement in 1959, declaring it void due to its imposition under threat, while China continues to use it to justify its occupation.
