At the 40th EU-China Human Rights Dialogue held in Brussels on 13 June, the EU voiced serious concern over China’s interference in the Dalai Lama’s succession and demanded transparency on the whereabouts of the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima. The EU also called for improved treatment and the release of Tibetan political prisoners. The Dialogue included discussions on regional autonomy models and urged China to adopt a rights-based approach to minority policy. Representative Rigzin Genkhang welcomed the EU’s stance as vital support for Tibetans’ efforts to protect their identity, culture, and freedoms.
