China's heightened control over Tibet has drastically reduced the number of Tibetans fleeing to India, reports ANI. Only eight Tibetans arrived in Dharamshala in 2024, compared to 3,000 annually before 2008. Penpa Tsering, President of the Tibetan government-in-exile, attributes the decline to stricter surveillance following the 2008 uprising and demographic shifts in Tibet. The dwindling arrivals have left the Tibetan Reception Centre near Dharamshala largely empty and affected Tibetan schools in exile, some facing closure. He also highlighted efforts to preserve Tibetan culture through compact communities, particularly in Western countries, as the diaspora adapts to global dispersal.
