Backing Taiwan Ahead of Presidential Inauguration
Rep. Mike Gallagher, a known critic of China, is leading a group of US lawmakers to Taiwan. The Financial Times reported this visit, planned for February 21, aims to back Taiwan‘s soon-to-be President Lai Ching-te. Gallagher, who chairs the House Select Committee on China, has mentioned a trip to Taiwan earlier this year. However, his office has not yet commented on these plans.
Taiwan Welcomes US Delegation
Taiwan‘s officials, speaking from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Washington, expressed their appreciation for US lawmakers’ visits. They see it as a sign of support. Gallagher, since his appointment in January 2023, has voiced strong opposition to the Chinese Communist Party’s policies.

Expected Reaction from Beijing
Beijing often reacts strongly to such visits, emphasizing its opposition to official US–Taiwan interactions. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has already expressed concerns, urging the US to handle Taiwan-related matters with caution and to avoid sending the wrong message to separatist forces.
A Significant Move for Gallagher
This trip comes as Gallagher, a prominent Republican and former Marine, announces his plan to retire from Congress. Having served for eight years, he views this visit as part of his ongoing commitment to supporting Taiwan and addressing issues related to China.
The upcoming visit highlights the ongoing US support for Taiwan, amidst complex international relations involving China.
