The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) has expressed serious concerns about ongoing human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and Tibet Autonomous Region, according to spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani. Following a UN visit to China in June, the delegation highlighted problematic laws and policies in Xinjiang, urging Chinese authorities to review these from a human rights perspective. The UN also called for the release of individuals arbitrarily detained and stressed the need for continued dialogue between China and civil society to protect human rights. Despite limited access and fear of reprisals, the UN intends to closely monitor the situation.
