Dhonyu, a dedicated Tibetan language teacher at an elementary school in Meruma, Ngaba county, Tibet, has been dismissed from his position. The decision was made on the grounds that he was not adhering to the Chinese educational policies during his teachings. This information was provided to the Tibet Times by a Tibetan source from Meruma who is currently in exile.

For over 15 years, Dhonyu had been an integral part of the school, committed to teaching Tibetan language and history. However, according to the source, he had faced multiple summonses by local authorities prior to his dismissal. These authorities insisted that his teaching methods aligned strictly with the Chinese educational directives, discouraging any emphasis on Tibetan cultural aspects.

The impact of Dhonyu’s dismissal has resonated deeply within the community, with students and parents expressing their distress on social media. According to Tibet Times, a video received to them shows emotional scenes of students hugging Dhonyu as he prepared to leave the school premises, highlighting the strong bond and affection the students held for him.

This incident is part of a broader context where Tibetan educators are often pressured to conform to official policies that may sideline or suppress the teaching of Tibetan culture and history. The removal of Dhonyu underscores ongoing tensions in the region over educational and cultural rights.
