In Dharamshala, former Tibetan political prisoner Namkyi, recently addressed a press conference discussing the harsh realities faced by Tibetans under Chinese rule. Released from prison where she faced severe abuse, Namkyi shared her painful experiences and pleaded for unity among Tibetans in exile, urging them to set aside regional and religious disputes to support those suffering in Tibet.

Namkyi’s Journey from Captivity to Advocacy

Namkyi recounted her and her sister’s arrest in 2015 after they held a protest in Tibet. Sentenced to three years in prison, they endured “patriotic education,” forced labor, and harsh conditions, only to continue facing restrictions after their release. Namkyi escaped to Nepal in May 2023 and then to Dharamshala, where she now studies and advocates for Tibetan unity and cultural preservation.

A Call for Solidarity Among Tibetans

During her address, Namkyi expressed disappointment in discovering regional biases among Tibetans in exile, contrasting it with the unity shown by those in Tibet. She emphasized the importance of setting aside internal divisions to focus on the broader goal of Tibetan freedom and cultural preservation.

Namkyi’s story is not just a testament to her resilience but also a reminder of the ongoing struggle for Tibetan rights and identity. Her call for unity underscores the need for collective efforts in preserving Tibetan culture and supporting those in Tibet against oppressive measures by the Chinese government.
