Glaciers in China’s Tibetan regions have shrunk by 26% since 1960, with 7,000 small glaciers disappearing, according to a new UNESCO report. The report warns of faster glacial retreat in recent years, especially in Tibet. The glacier area fell from 59,000 to 46,000 square kilometers between 1960 and 2020. Researchers presented these findings on March 21, World Day for Glaciers, noting increased disaster risks and water scarcity as key concerns. The study was based on China’s third national glacier inventory.
