The Minneapolis Institute of Art now hosts the "Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room," a collection donated by New York collector Alice S. Kandell. As *Star Tribune* reports, Kandell began collecting Tibetan art during her travels to Sikkim in the 1960s. Many of the over 200 objects in the shrine, dating from the 1300s to the 1900s, were bought from Tibetan refugees who sold their sacred items in desperation after losing their homeland during the Chinese invasion. Kandell, deeply moved, promised not to resell the artifacts but to preserve them for education and spiritual reflection.
