In a recent clash in the Tibet, four Tibetans were detained for protesting against the seizure of their pasture land by Chinese authorities, as reported by Radio Free Asia. The incident occurred in Markham county, Chamdo, where local Tibetans had appealed against the unauthorized sale of their land to businessmen by a county official.

The residents of Taktsa village found out in April 2023 that their land had been sold without their knowledge and without any compensation offered to them. When the businessmen began to clear the land, the Tibetans confronted the authorities demanding payment. The response from the police was to arrest four protesters and use physical force against others present at the scene.

The land in question, used by approximately 25 Tibetan families for grazing and recreation, has been a part of a larger issue in the region. The authorities in the Tibet Autonomous Region and other Tibetan-populated areas often disregard local concerns about land grabs, which are frequently linked to mining and development projects driven by Chinese officials.

The situation escalated as locals demanded compensation for the seized land. Despite their appeals, the response has been marked by suppression. Videos obtained by RFA depict Tibetans pleading before the police, displaying gestures of mercy, a cultural sign of desperation and appeal.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of rights abuses and land seizures in the region, which have been documented but often ignored by local authorities. The official involved in the land sale has been arrested on charges of corruption, yet the plight of the Tibetans continues as they face restrictions on sharing information about their situation.
