Nancy Pelosi, also a long-standing supporter of Tibet and a close friend of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, received the nation’s highest civilian award for her exceptional contributions. Pelosi has been a prominent figure in U.S. politics, notably the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or other major public or private endeavors. Pelosi’s award highlights her over three decades of dedicated service in Congress, where she has been a strong voice for justice and human rights.

The ceremony honored a diverse group of 19 recipients, including 10 men and nine women from various fields. This year’s awardees were noted for their “relentless curiosity, inventiveness, ingenuity, and hope,”. These qualities underscore their contributions to a hopeful future.
According to an AP news report, Among the recipients were individuals from the worlds of science, religion, and LGBTQ+ advocacy, illustrating the broad impact of the awardees. Three of the medals were awarded posthumously, recognizing the contributions of those who have passed away but left a lasting legacy.
