China’s No. 4 Leader Visits Tibet, Calls for Ethnic Unity Law Enforcement

China’s fourth-ranking leader Wang Huning visited Tibet from July 19 to 22 and called for tighter stability measures and full enforcement of the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law. Wang, a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee and chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, visited Lhasa and Ngari Prefecture. He said maintaining stability is the top priority in governing Tibet and called for Tibetan Buddhism to adapt to socialist society. His visit came weeks after the law took effect on July 1 amid criticism from Tibetan representatives, the United States, and the European Union.
