China has acknowledged damage to at least five dams in Tibet caused by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on January 7, following initial claims of no impact. The disaster killed 126 people, injured hundreds, and damaged over 3,500 homes and religious structures. Analysts warned of risks to dams built in the earthquake-prone Himalayas, a region under Chinese occupation since 1950-51. A Chinese official reported cracks and severe damage, forcing the evacuation of six villages near a damaged dam in Dingri. According to Reuters, three dams have been emptied, and another is being drained.
