Chinese government scientists are proposing large-scale farming on the Tibetan Plateau to counter possible global food shortages caused by climate change. A report by the National Climate Centre (NCC), published in the journal Climate Change Research, warns of potential disasters like the collapse of the Amazon rainforest and ocean currents. The NCC suggests that the plateau, with its unique ecological features, could become “China’s future granary” if its environment is protected and plateau-specific agriculture is developed. The NCC operates under the China Meteorological Administration and advises on national climate policy.
