British Museum Removes ‘Xizang’ Label After Tibetan Protests

The British Museum removed the term “Xizang” from labels in its Silk Roads exhibition after criticism from Tibetan groups and activists in the UK, reports Radio Free Asia. Initially labeled as “Xizang Autonomous Region, China,” it was changed in January to “Tibet Autonomous Region, China.” Activists opposed “Xizang,” a term promoted by Beijing since 2023, arguing it erases Tibetan identity. The museum initially defended its labeling but later pledged to consult experts for future exhibitions. The Silk Roads exhibition, featuring over 300 artifacts, ran from September 2023 to February 2024.
