Bhutan criticized for using China’s preferred name ‘Xizang’ for Tibet

Bhutan’s recent use of the term “Xizang” to refer to Tibet in an official statement has drawn concern from Tibetan leaders and rights groups, who say the term supports Beijing’s campaign to erase Tibetan identity. The term appeared in a March 17 statement linked to a cultural event in Thimphu described as a “Chinese cultural performance.” Critics, including the Central Tibetan Administration and 144 support organizations, urged Bhutan to stop using language that aligns with China’s political agenda. Observers say this reflects China’s growing influence in Bhutan and a worrying trend of regional concessions to Beijing.
