Australian MPs raised concerns in Parliament over China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress and Beijing’s interference in the reincarnation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. MP Andrew Wilkie called the law “Orwellian” and urged the Australian Government not to put relations with China ahead of Tibetan human rights and cultural survival. MP Andrew Wallace said Tibetan children are being removed from their families and losing language and culture through state re-education. MPs Susan Templeman and David Smith said the Gaden Phodrang Trust holds sole authority over the Dalai Lama’s future reincarnation.
