In the past two months, torrential rains in southern China have caused landslides and flooding, resulting in over 150 deaths. In a recent disaster, a flood and mudslide in Sichuan's Tibetan region killed eight people, with 19 still missing. The early morning disaster also destroyed homes in Ridi village and led to a bridge collapse that killed two people. As China faces its peak flood season from mid-July to mid-August, government officials emphasize the need for improved disaster preparedness due to increasingly severe weather. Typhoon Gaemi's remnants recently killed 48 people in Hunan province.
