China has sanctioned 20 individuals in Canada and two advocacy groups, the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and the Canada Tibet Committee, over their work highlighting Beijing’s human rights abuses. The sanctions include travel bans and asset seizures.
Prominent figures, such as former diplomat Charles Burton and policy adviser Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, criticized the move as reflective of China's worsening policies under President Xi Jinping.
The sanctions follow Canada’s recent penalties on Chinese officials for abuses in Xinjiang and Tibet, where Uyghurs and Tibetans face repression. Beijing’s embassy and Canada’s Global Affairs Department have not commented till now.
