Tibetan Monk Released Early but Faces Strict Home Detention

Chinese authorities released Tibetan monk Trinley Gyatso from prison several months before his five-year sentence concluded, citing good behavior. However, he remains under intense surveillance and effective home detention. Security forces arrested Gyatso in July 2021 for distributing teachings of the Dalai Lama. Following prolonged interrogation without due process, a court sentenced him to a Chengdu prison. Although free from the facility, officials have barred him from returning to his religious studies at Kirti Monastery. The International Campaign for Tibet reports his current health remains unconfirmed, adding to concerns over his continued restrictions.
