Tibetan Monk in Critical Condition After Torture Over Anti-Dam Protest

Serious concerns have been raised for Tibetan monk Gonpo Tsering, 45, who is in critical condition after being tortured in custody for opposing a major hydropower project in Derge, eastern Tibet. Tibet Watch reported that Gonpo, head of Yena Monastery, suffered brain injuries, blindness, and difficulty speaking after detention. He is now hospitalised in Chengdu. His arrest followed protests against the Kamtok dam, which threatens to submerge sacred sites and displace thousands. Another monk, Jamyang Lekshay, was sentenced to four years. UN experts have separately urged China to explain the detention and torture of Tibetan activist Namkyi.
