Recent landslides in Bathang County have severely damaged National Highway 215, disrupting travel and raising environmental concerns. While Chinese authorities blame natural causes, local Tibetan sources attribute the disaster to the rapid proliferation of hydroelectric projects along the Drichu (Yangtze) River. Extensive excavation for tunnels and dams has reportedly destabilized the mountainous terrain, leading to soil erosion and infrastructure collapse. Currently, 14 power stations operate in the region, with 13 more under construction. These massive energy projects face continued criticism from local communities regarding their long-term environmental impact on the fragile valley ecosystem.
