A Taiwanese businessman, Fang Hsiang, and his associates were sentenced for espionage. Fang, in his seventies and head of a Taiwanese business association in China, was accused of spying on Taiwanese and Tibetan independence activists in Taiwan. He was recruited by a Chinese official, surnamed Hou, from Hainan's National Security Department. Fang recruited others, including a man from the Mongolian and Tibetan Cultural Center in Taipei. The court sentenced Fang to five and a half years in prison, while his associate received three years. This case highlights China's ongoing interest in Taiwanese and Tibetan activities.
