The Sikkim government has stepped up efforts to bring the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, back to the state. Ecclesiastical Minister Sonam Lama said he has discussed the issue with senior central leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, and received approval to reach out directly. Although the Karmapa’s exact location abroad is not confirmed, Lama pledged to personally lead a delegation once contact is made. A committee has been formed and Rs 1 crore allocated in the latest budget. For Sikkimese Buddhists, his return to Rumtek Monastery holds deep religious and cultural significance.
